Based on March 2011 statistics over 30 million Indonesians are living below the poverty line. One of the ways Wall Street Insititute is trying to alleviate poverty is by improving Indonesia’s standard of living through education. Reading is a necessary first step in this process. The stark reality is that in many parts of our nation access to books and decent public libraries is a luxury even in today’s modern world.
This may be hard to imagine in comparison to some of our homes which may have book shelves overflowing with books we haven’t read in ages. Through our Smart Nation Book Drive, we would like to raise awareness that many of us may have books that we have already read and could share with our lesser neighbors. By collecting books and working in conjunction with Yayasan 1001buku, a non-profit organization that distributes books to various community libraries throughout Indonesia, Wall Street English hopes that we can facilitate access to books for disadvantaged Indonesian communities. In July 2011, 6000 books were donated to Yayasan 1001buku. Wall Street English provides a permanent book shelf at our Ratu Plaza center for anyone to donate their books – open 7 days a week.
